Mission Possible: Faith, Power, and Outreach in Action

Listen to the devotional podcast here

Day 1: The Spirit's Power and Bold Proclamation

Reflection: Our journey into "Mission Possible," the Book of Acts, begins by understanding the foundational power at play. The first section of Acts, chapters one through four, verse four, details what was "told by God" in the "fulfillment section" (Chapter 1) and what was "done by God" in the "being filled section" (Chapter 2), marked by the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This divine empowerment led to the "freedom section" (Chapter 3 to 4:4), where we see the reaction to the power of God. Peter, empowered by the Holy Spirit, preached his second sermon after the healing of the lame beggar, leading to 5,000 more people coming to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This incredible growth demonstrates that true revival stems from trusting in God's work rather than human approval. The early church was filled with excitement and an uncontainable joy about what God was doing.

Declaration: We declare that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, called to respond to God's work with faith and boldness, knowing that true revival comes from Him alone.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for filling us with Your Holy Spirit. Grant us the boldness of Peter and John to proclaim Your truth and witness Your transformative power, so that Your kingdom may grow and many more come to know You. Amen.

Day 2: Unwavering Faith in the Face of Opposition

Reflection: As the early church experienced revival, they also encountered significant opposition. In the "Revival section" (Acts 4:5-4:37), the rulers and elders became frantic due to the disciples' preaching and healing. They questioned Peter and John, asking "What power and what name do you do this?". Despite being thrown in jail for a night and later threatened, Peter and John boldly refused to stop speaking in the name of Jesus Christ. Their response demonstrated the power of unwavering faith and obedience to God even in the face of opposition. This section encourages us to stand firm in our faith, regardless of the challenges or pressures we face from the world.

Declaration: We declare our unwavering faith and obedience to God, choosing to stand firm in His truth even when faced with threats or opposition, just as Peter and John did.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen our faith when the world comes against us. Give us the courage to speak Your name boldly and to stand firm in Your truth, knowing that Your power is greater than any opposition. Amen.

Day 3: Community, Sacrifice, and Integrity

Reflection: The excitement and enthusiasm within the early church led to remarkable acts of self-sacrifice and generosity, as seen in the "Retribution section" (Acts 5:1-5:42). Everyone was focusing on the Kingdom, exemplified by Joseph, nicknamed Barnabas, who sold his land and gave all the proceeds to the apostles, demonstrating an incredible commitment to the community's mission. This atmosphere of profound excitement and dedication to spiritual growth was a key characteristic of the early church. However, the story also reveals the critical importance of integrity through the tragic example of Ananias and Sapphira, who died after attempting to deceive the apostles about their offering. This shows that fear gripped the church after their deaths, emphasizing the seriousness of internal motives within a community driven by God's Spirit.

Declaration: We declare a commitment to self-sacrificial generosity and integrity, valuing the growth of God's Kingdom above personal gain, and seeking to be genuine in all our actions.

Prayer: Gracious God, inspire us with the spirit of generosity and genuine sacrifice seen in Barnabas. Help us to cultivate integrity in our hearts and actions, ensuring our motives always align with Your will, so that Your church may thrive in purity and love. Amen.

Day 4: Divine Intervention and Rejoicing in Persecution

Reflection: Even after the challenges of internal integrity, the apostles continued to face intense external opposition, yet God's miraculous power was evident. After ministering signs and wonders, the apostles were arrested again, only to be miraculously freed by an angel of the Lord. Despite this divine intervention, the enraged religious leaders still had them beaten. What is truly remarkable is the disciples' response: they rejoiced, deemed themselves worthy, and immediately went back to teaching and preaching. This powerful example underscores the lesson to know God's transformative power and believe that it can turn challenges into opportunities for spiritual growth. Their endurance and joy in suffering demonstrate a profound spiritual maturity, reminding us to constantly continue to grow spiritually.

Declaration: We declare our belief in God's transformative power to turn our challenges into opportunities for spiritual growth, and we commit to rejoicing in Him even amidst suffering, knowing He is always at work.

Prayer: Almighty God, we thank You for Your divine protection and interventions. When we face trials or persecution, help us to remember the apostles' joy and perseverance. Empower us to continually grow spiritually and to see every challenge as an opportunity to draw closer to You and deepen our faith. Amen.

Day 5: Resolution, Growth, and Sharing Our Faith

Reflection: The final subsection of the second section of Acts (Chapter 6:1-6:7), termed the "Resolution section," highlights the early church's ability to address internal issues and continue its expansion. When a complaint arose from the Hellenist widows feeling neglected in daily distribution, the disciples wisely chose seven Spirit-filled followers, including Stephen, to oversee this ministry. This organizational wisdom allowed the apostles to focus on teaching and preaching. The result was profound: "the word of God continued" to increase, and even priests became followers of Christ. This segment perfectly encapsulates the ultimate encouragement from this part of Acts: share your faith. It is not merely a job but a lifestyle, a personal relationship with God that compels us to be vessels for sharing the gospel with others. The challenge for us today remains: stand firm, continue to grow, and tell others.

Declaration: We declare our commitment to sharing our faith as a lifestyle, to standing firm in our beliefs, and to continually growing in our relationship with God, so that His word may increase and many more may come to know Him.

Prayer: God of the Universe, thank You for the wisdom You impart to Your church. Help us to be effective vessels for Your gospel, living a lifestyle that naturally shares Your truth. Grant us the courage to tell others about Jesus, so that Your kingdom may expand and Your name be glorified throughout the world. Amen.
